Natural Heritage and The Massachusetts Endangered Species Act

The Natural Heritage division of the Massachusetts Fish and Wildlife Service is entrusted to protect the habit areas of those species of plant or animal which are listed on the Federal and State Endangered Species list or the Threatened Species List. Several areas in the Town of Swansea have been designated areas as habitat areas requiring a separate filing under the Massachusetts Endangered Species Act (MESA) as well as the Wetlands Protection Act. See MESA website and filings and exemptions

To determine whether your project is in a priority habitat area click here or contact the Conservation Commission to review the available map.

Note that even if your project is not within an area jurisdictional to the Conservation Commission under the Wetlands Protection Act or the Swansea Wetlands Protection By-law, it still may require a MESA filing.
